status management flexibility

Dear Experts,

I'm trying to find a practical solution for allowing one status to be set at any time on a quotation while  keeping a clean status profile.

Please check the example below:

The possible values of the quotation status are on the left.

The user positions are on the right.

     created                            initial state

to be approved                set by sales advisor

     approved                         set by manager

     rejected                           set by manager

sent to customer             set by sales advisor

I need to add another status "expired" that will be set automatically through an action.

(the "expired" status is set if the current status is neither "accepted" nor "refused" after the validity date passes)

This status needs to be available (to be used/set) at any moment.

So the normal sequence in the status profile should look like this:

     created

     expired

     to be approved

     expired

     approved

     expired

     rejected

     expired

     sent to customer

     expired

The repetition of a status within a status profile is not possible.

So I end up with the following form,  which is quite inconvenient.

     created

     expired1

     completed

     expired2

     to be approved

     expired3

     approved

     expired4

     rejected

     expired5

     sent to customer

     expired6

    Any opinions would be appreciated.

Regards

Razvan Zainea
